Renew The Vows And Declare the Love
I know a couple that has been married for fifty years. When they first tied the knot, they must have tied it well and double knotted it because they are more in love now than they ever were. I just had to ask what their secret is since I have been married twice myself and I'm hoping this one will last forever. What I learned is actually no secret at all. In fact, it is common knowledge that most of us tend to forget or take for granted from time to time.
John and Mary were poor when they married back in the fifties. He worked his heart out in the automobile industry and she waited tables deep into the night shift. They saved their money diligently and started a family. They encountered many difficulties over the years but the one thing they held true to was their love for each other. John told me that the secret to his marital longevity was simple. Whenever he tried to imagine what his life would be like if his Mary were suddenly gone it would scare him so bad that he knew he could not bear it. Mary told me just about the same thing. She looks at their friends who are married and thanks God every day that her John is not like the other husbands who stay out late at night and put their marriages second.
John and Mary are two of a kind yet they are as different as night and day. He would say the she is his polar south and he is a magnet. They push each other away so they have to work to stay together and that always made things interesting. It is usually at this point Mary would swat him with a rolled up magazine and tell him to stop kidding around.
John and Mary recently renewed their wedding vows and had the kind of wedding Mary always wanted but could never afford. After fifty-three years of marriage, they had a unique plan in mind and threw down on a wedding that no one who attended will ever forget. With their usual charm and wit, they made their wedding something special. Even their wedding party favors were unique. My favorite bridal party favor is a rope tying two coffee mugs together, one with a picture of John and the other of Mary. The writing on the rope says the family that shakes together stays together. They do love their coffee.
The point is that it is never too late to have the wedding of which you have always dreamed. A renewal of your wedding vows is an affirmation that you are still in love with each other and life could not change that. Mary would tell you that having a child together is also a very strong bonding point and that they were truly blessed to be able to have such healthy and hale children.
No matter how old you are or how long you have been together, you can renew your vows and make a re-affirmation of your love for each other. Doing it right the second time can be just as fun and possibly more romantic that the first. You will certainly have more time to plan and design an unforgettable experience that you can share with friends and family. It is also a wonderful goal for which to save money. You have proven your love and now you can reap the rewards of having a wonderful wedding and reception, the one you wanted when you first started out together but may not have been able to afford.
